When a family member is accused of mistreating his or her child in Florida or elsewhere, the reaction is often to take a defensive stance and fight against those claims. However, there are many child custody cases in which parents are unable to overcome the assertions made by the state’s social services agency. An example is found in a case in which a mother is accusing social workers of taking improper action.

The mother’s attorney claims that social workers removed her child from his family home without cause. The boy’s parents were unable to agree on how to care for the child, who was severely underweight at the age of 14 months. They sought the services of a physician and nutritionist, but they struggled with each other over the right course of action to take.

The father made multiple claims against the mother, including asserting that she had a mental illness and was not properly feeding her child. That led to a report to social workers, who agreed with the father about the mother’s inability to care for the child. As a result, the little boy was removed from his home and eventually placed in the care of his father.

The mother is now fighting to regain her child custody rights. She is also insisting that the social workers who failed to help reunite her with her son be held accountable for their actions. This is one in a string of cases in which social workers have been accused of interfering in child custody matters in a manner that does little to support the needs of the child. Many Florida residents will follow this case to see how the matter is ultimately resolved.
