Protect your rights in regards to alimony

On Behalf of | Jul 14, 2017 | Uncategorized |

Alimony, also known as spousal support, is nothing more than money that one person pays to another during a divorce. In some cases, this money is also paid from one spouse to the other after the divorce is final.

The reason for this is simple: to allow the recipient to maintain the same standard of living that he or she accessed during the marriage. Payments will typically continue until the person receiving the money is able to become self-sufficient.

Alimony is paid monthly or in one lump sum. While there are times when alimony is permanent, it’s more likely that it will be temporary.

It doesn’t matter if you are expecting to receive or pay alimony, you need to know your legal rights to ensure that you take the necessary steps during your divorce case.

At our law firm, we know that alimony is one of the most difficult details to work through. It’s likely that one person will argue that he or she should receive payments, while the other fights against this. Making this even more complicated is the fact that there are no guidelines in place in regards to how much should be paid, as is the case with child support.

The best thing you can do is learn more about alimony, including your legal rights and how things can unfold as your divorce case moves forward.

Maybe you need to fight for your right to receive alimony. Or maybe you need to prove that you shouldn’t have to pay spousal support. Either way, you need to be proactive to give yourself the best chance of success.
