Although nobody wants to be faced with the divorce process, there may come a time when you don’t have any choice. You realize that this is the best way to move on with your life.

If you want to ask your spouse for a divorce, there are several key steps you must take. Here are three things to keep in mind:

— Be prepared. You don’t want to go into this conversation with no idea of what you’re trying to accomplish. Instead, be prepared for the discussion and anything that could come your way.

— Be safe. If you have reason to believe that your spouse could become upset and violent, choose to have the conversation in a public place. Depending on the circumstances, you may even need to have the discussion on the phone.

— Leave the details for later. You don’t have to discuss every aspect of the divorce upfront. There is plenty of time to touch on this at a later date. For example, matters involving child custody and property division will be worked out as the process moves forward.

These are just a few of the many things you can do when asking your spouse for a divorce. This is never an easy conversation, but it may be something you have to do at some point in your life.

From there, once you have all the details on the table, you can learn more about the legal process and what the future will bring. Soon enough, you’ll be well on your way to putting your relationship and its troubles in the past.
