Focus on the right goals during divorce mediation

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2017 | Divorce |

In order for divorce mediation to work, two things must happen:

— Both individuals must be on board with the idea that this is better than litigation.

— You need to understand the goals of the process.

When you focus on the right goals during divorce mediation, it’s much easier to move forward in a timely and efficient manner.

While no two divorcing couples are in the exact same position, here are some goals of divorce mediation that should always be at the forefront:

— To create a mutually acceptable, legally sound divorce agreement that encompasses all issues.

— To avoid the financial expense and time associated with traditional litigation.

— To minimize the stress, tension and hostility among the couple.

Along with the above, many people also find that divorce mediation makes the process easier on their children. This is especially true if you’re able to move through this in a timely manner, thus putting the entire divorce process in the past as soon as possible.

It goes without saying that there are many benefits associated with divorce mediation. It also goes without saying that there are times when litigation is the only option, as the couple is not able to work together in this type of environment.

As long as you understand the goals of divorce mediation from the start, you’re in much better position to make this work.

Remember, just because you opt for mediation doesn’t mean that you lose control to your former spouse. Instead, you actually gain a more prominent role in the process, as you’re able to voice your opinion and work toward what is best for you.
