One of the first steps for Florida spouses who are considering filing for divorce is to secure legal counsel. This is often accomplished even before an individual discusses divorce with his or her spouse, as many spouses choose to gather information and make a plan well in advance of actually filing for divorce. When searching for an attorney, it can be difficult to know where to begin, especially in an area in which there are literally hundreds of choices.
One of the most important aspects of choosing an attorney is the interpersonal connection between the legal professional and client. This is a relationship that is being forged, albeit a professional and not a personal one. Finding an individual who is personable and engaged in the process is essential. A divorce attorney will learn a great deal about one’s marriage, finances, parenting style and other personal information. Finding an attorney who seems eager to use that information to reach a favorable divorce settlement is important.
When meeting for an initial consultation, arrive prepared with a list of questions. Be sure that the divorce approach that you want to take is one that is in line with the attorney’s manner of practice. For example, a spouse who seeks a collaborative divorce process might not be a good fit for an attorney who takes a combative stance and favors aggressive negotiation strategies.
Finally, be willing to listen to your gut when it comes to selecting a Florida divorce attorney. While this professional relationship will be relatively short in duration, the financial and child custody results of the collaboration will last for many years to come. Finding a good fit is a worthy goal, even if it takes the time and expense of several consultations to make that decision.
