Will social media be the death of your marriage?

On Behalf of | May 18, 2015 | Divorce |

While widely touted as a means to stay more connected, a new study indicates that social media websites like Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter are actually driving a wedge between many married couples. In a survey of 2,000 married couples, a U.K. law firm discovered that one out of every seven individuals stated that a spouse’s social media activities could be grounds for divorce.

For many of the coupes surveyed, arguments over social media use were a weekly or daily occurrence with roughly one-quarter admitting to fighting about a spouse’s social media use at least one per week and 17 percent every day. Additionally, unbeknownst to their spouse, nearly 60 percent of survey respondents knew their husband’s or wife’s social media login information.

The results of this study indicate that, when it comes to marriage and the relationship between spouses, social media may in fact be doing more harm than good. In cases where a spouse spends more time logged in to a Facebook account that tuned in to a spouse, something needs to change.

For many of the spouses surveyed, social media use incites jealously which erodes trust between spouses and can serve to poison a marriage. In cases where a spouse is annoyed or concerned about a spouse’s social media use, it’s important to address one’s concerns directly with a spouse. It’s also wise to be respectful and kind when discussing a spouse’s social media use and to avoid attacking or putting a spouse down.

In cases where a spouse disregard’s a husband’s or wife’s concerns, it may be a sign that a marriage is really in trouble.
