On Behalf of | Feb 16, 2017 | Family Law |

If you find yourself paying child support, you hope that everything remains the same in the future. However, if your financial situation changes, it’s imperative to learn more about the modification process.

In short, you have the right to request a child support modification from the appropriate family law court. This doesn’t mean that your request will be approved, but you definitely have the right to take this action.

Here are some tips to follow:

— Don’t wait too long to request a child support modification. Once you know that you’re facing a change in financial circumstances, such as a job loss or illness, you should put the wheels in motion.

— Learn more about your state’s laws regarding a modification. The more knowledge you have the easier it is to formulate a strategy for having your request approved.

— Reach out to the other parent. In some cases, you may be able to explain yourself to the other parent in an attempt to reach an agreement outside of court.

— Keep making payments. Even if you think your modification request will be approved, you should continue to make full payments for as long as possible. If you can’t, don’t hesitate to make a partial payment.

These aren’t the only steps you will take if requesting a child support modification, but they will definitely put you on the right track. When you know what’s expected of you and when you know which steps to take, you’ll realize that you’re in position to move through the process in a fast and efficient manner.
