Step-Parent Adoption

Step-parent adoption is the most common form of adoption in the United States. It is a wonderful way to legally unite a blended family and provide everyone security and permanency.

The non-custodial biological parent is released from all financial and parental responsibilities and the adoptive step-parent becomes the legal parent, obtains custody rights and assumes legal responsibilities.

The step-parent adoption process in Florida is relatively quick, easy and inexpensive. In Florida, no report, recommendation or favorable home study is required for a step-parent adoption. The Florida legal system, does not require background checks or clearances for step-parent adoptions. There is also no waiting period for a step-parent adoption.

Attorney Rebekah Brown-Wiseman is experienced in termination of parental rights (TPR) cases. Prior to her private legal work, she represented the State of Florida as a Department of Children and Families Attorney in termination of parental rights cases.

The Fort Lauderdale Law Firm of Rebekah Brown-Wiseman, P.A., will petition the court for the termination of the other parent’s biological rights and for the step-parent adoption. The adoption lawyer will then either obtain the written consent of the other biological parent or will seek a ruling from the court to terminate parental rights of the biological parent. Florida’s unique process for step-parent adoption permits the adoption hearing to be held in the same court hearing as the termination of parental rights matter, if desired.
